Writing An ‘About’ Page
Please subscribe to ProTycoon.com via the RSS Feed or Via Email.
Yesterday I asked the question ‘Is Your Blog Ready?’, one of the benchmarks I used to judge whether or not a blog was ready was by whether it had an ‘About‘ page.
The ‘About’ page of your blog should give people an insight into:
- Who you are
- What you do
- What you aim to teach
- How people can contact you
You do not need to write an essay or your life story as most visitors will use your about page to have a quick glance at who you are and what you do. If you have a look at my ‘About‘ page, you will notice that it is very short and addresses the points I highlighted above.
By not having an ‘About’ page on your blog you are not allowing people to get a quick insight into who you are and what your blog has to offer, this can put a few readers off your blog as they want to know what the blog is all about at a quick glance.
You can also use your ‘About’ page to highlight some of your ‘Top Posts’ or any other blogs that you are currently working on. I have split the ‘About‘ page and ‘Top Posts‘ page on ProTycoon.com but will be merging them into one in the coming weeks. I have included a picture of myself in my ‘About’ page as it allows people to get a picture of the person who is writing the blog.
I want to know what you use the ‘About’ page for on your blog? And what you look for in an ‘About’ page on a blog that you are reading?

I really struggle with writing about myself, so my about pages are usually pretty bad.

Excellent. I am in the process of writing this right now on one of my blogs and these tips will definitely come in useful, even though this particular about us page will be slightly out of the ordinary.
Thank you for all your advice David. Both for football and blogs.

When I’m writing about your site, I’m using your ‘About’ page as my basic, so it is quite easier to give a simple review.

About pages have so many uses, that is why every blog should have them

One of the most important factors that will usually make up my mind whether I will read a blog or not is it’s about page, if it has one that is
David Shaw | July 7th, 2008 at 8:56 am #
@Rajaie
Yeah, it is an important factor that many bloggers overlook

I haven’t created an about page for the blog I mention in this comment, but I am a firm believer in including a few personal things to convey personality and humanize the blog even further.

It is important that your visitors feel they are interacting with someone real, that they can associate themselves with

I use the about page to give an overview of what the blog is about. I write a general bit about myself, but nothing major. I am always tweaking it of course so….we’ll see where it ends up!
