Direct Ad Sales Vs Affiliate Ads

The end of the month has arrived and I am now looking forward towards August, one of my decisions now is what to do with my 125×125 Ad spots for the month.
I have one spot being given away to the winner of my contest and have agreed a deal with another blogger to show their Ad on my site in August, that leaves four free Ad spots for the month of August.
In my eyes I have two options, I can either sell the remaining 4 spots for a set amount, or I can go for the riskier option of adding affiliate Ads which could yield higher results but could also earn nothing.
It seems that many bloggers go for a mix of direct ad sales and affiliate ads on their blogs, this is a good way of getting a fixed amount as well as a varied amount. I think that this is the best way of optimising your blogs income, I have decided to sell 4 of my spots directly and have the other two spots as affiliate Ads.
If you are interested in purchasing an Ad on ProTycoon.com then please feel free to contact me for the price.
I want to know what method you prefer to use on your blog? I also want to know how you go about selling your 125×125 Ad spots?

I am sorry I have not been around much recently, have been busy setting up my new blog and getting my writing team sorted:

I should have everything sorted in the next few days and be back to full strength here!

Sometimes I contact the advertisers and sometimes they contact me, the rest of the times I go with being an affiliate.

I haven’t been promoting Affiliate Ads aggressively and am still pretty unsure if it really does pay off in the long run. Perhaps it’s time to include it on my To-Do list..
Good luck, pal.

You should ask around in forums, tell people you are looking!

During the month of July, I opened 2 spots for direct sale and put 2 affiliates. It didn’t turn out very well. So this month, I am trying PerformancingAds.
By the way, I want to buy ads on PerformancingAds publishers who sign up through me. I wrote about it in my blog. Any interested are welcome.
I also use ProjectWonderful (2 spots). I like this program because it generates revenue constantly. How big the revenue is, only depends on how big your traffic is.

Affiliates are a great way to test your market and your price… Lets say you made $10 a month with affiliates, then you can’t go wrong on pricing your spot less than $10… So thats how you can test it..
just my 2 cents

I noticed folks to be banner ad blind especially if they are clustered. A suggestion. Perhaps you can consider starting with a few boxes and gradually add from there. This will also give advertisers a feel that there’s not much competition for attention if they place an ad or campaign.
Nowadays, instead of ads, I sell sponsorship to contests instead. It may take more work but the buzz generated, if successful, builds higher trust and investment.
