I noticed folks to be banner ad blind especially if they are clustered. A suggestion. Perhaps you can consider starting with a few boxes and gradually add from there. This will also give advertisers a feel that there's not much competition for attention if they place an ad or campaign.

Nowadays, instead of ads, I sell sponsorship to contests instead. It may take more work but the buzz generated, if successful, builds higher trust and investment.

Affiliates are a great way to test your market and your price... Lets say you made $10 a month with affiliates, then you can't go wrong on pricing your spot less than $10... So thats how you can test it..

just my 2 cents

During the month of July, I opened 2 spots for direct sale and put 2 affiliates. It didn't turn out very well. So this month, I am trying PerformancingAds.
By the way, I want to buy ads on PerformancingAds publishers who sign up through me. I wrote about it in my blog. Any interested are welcome.
I also use ProjectWonderful (2 spots). I like this program because it generates revenue constantly. How big the revenue is, only depends on how big your traffic is.

I haven't been promoting Affiliate Ads aggressively and am still pretty unsure if it really does pay off in the long run. Perhaps it's time to include it on my To-Do list..

Good luck, pal.

Sometimes I contact the advertisers and sometimes they contact me, the rest of the times I go with being an affiliate.
