If you run Google Adsense on your website, then no doubt you have done some research into how you can get the best results from the ad units. We have put together 5 tips that we believe will help you improve your CTR and earnings.
One tip I will point out that is not in our top 5 Google Adsense optimization tips is that in order to get good results you need good traffic, and in order to get good traffic you need good content. So remember that ‘Content is King’.
Tip 1. - Adsense Unit Location - The best performing position for Adsense ads is in the middle of the page above the fold. If you run a blog with long posts then you may also get good results by adding an Adsense unit at the end of your post (Similar to what we have on this blog).
Tip 2. - Adsense Unit Format - There are 3 formats that seem to out-perform others. These are the 336×280, 300×250 and 160×600. The first two are great for floating inside blog posts, or in the middle of your content and the 160×600 is great for filling space on the side of your pages.
Tip 3. - Adsense Unit Colors - The best performing Adsense units are the ones that blend in with your site. You should match your Adsense unit background color to the color of your site, make them look like they belong in the site.
Tip 4. - Avoid Adsense Unit Blindness - As in Tip 3, you need to blend the units into your site, as this will help to avoid Ad Blindness, this is because if they stand out too much the user will identify them as Ads and not even look at them. You may also find that you increase your CTR by alternating the position of your Ads on the page, as this will remind frequent users that your Ads are there.
Tip 5. - Experiment with your Ads - There is no golden bullet, what works for one site might not work for another, so you need to experiment to find out what colors and formats work best on your site. Use channels to find out which Ads perform best, you may find that by changing the link color or format size you can double your earnings.

I found that putting adsense blocks next to pictures has increased CTR. Just make sure you put a border around the pic or some sort of spacer to differentiate the picture from the adsense.

This is a risky thing to do, obviously it is against google TOS to place Adsense next to images, but am not totally sure of the rules in regards to having borders around the image, or how far images need to be from Ads.
