Increase Your RSS Subscribers

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed, to keep up to date with all the latest blogging news and tips.

Yesterday I made you all aware of RSS Awareness Day, today I am going to build on the current buzz of RSS and provide you with a tip to help you increase your RSS subscriber count.

There is a wordpress plugin that allows you to display a message to first time visitors asking them to subscribe to your blog’s feed (using cookies). The plugin is called “What Would Seth Godin Do” and has been developed by Richard K Miller after reading a quote by Seth Godin:

One opportunity that’s underused is the idea of using cookies to treat returning visitors differently than newbies. It’s more work at first, but it can offer two experiences to two different sorts of people.

By default the message shown is “If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!” and disappears after three visits.

A suggestion by Richard K Miller on using the plugin is:

New visitors will appreciate some context and background information about your site. This is your chance to offer them a special welcome and invite them to become permanent subscribers!

It is really easy to install the plugin on your wordpress blog. All you have to do is upload the what_would_seth_godin_do.php file to your plugins folder and activate it. The plugin also allows you to customize the message, its lifespan, and its location.

You can download the plugin here.
