I annouced last week that I am looking to hold some ‘bloggers surveys‘ to get a general overview of bloggers approaches to blogging. I have now compiled the first of my surveys for you to partake in.

The survey will only take a few minutes to complete with the aim of finding the answers to some of the most asked blogging quesions. I am looking to survey around 100 bloggers from many different niches.

The results of the surveys will be used create an ebook that will answer many of the top blogging quesions. I will be featuring bloggers in the ebook, so this is also a chance to get some free publicity. I will also do a roundup of each survey here on ProTycoon.com so subscribe to my feed so that you don’t miss out.

I wrote a few days ago about the ‘Building RSS Group Writing Project‘, this was a contest where bloggers submit their RSS building techniques via posts on their blog, that linked back to the contest page. In total 19 articles were submitted by 13 different bloggers, generating 78 great tips to help bloggers increase their RSS Subscriber Count.

I strongly suggest you check out the 78 Tips to Increase RSS Subscribers for Your Blog.

As I mentioned in my previous post there were some great prizes up for grabs, 3 of the 4 winners have been announced, one lucky blogger actually took two of the prizes:

Overall Winner: David Shaw – ProTycoon.com (Me)

Random Winner: Paul Piotrowski -InspiredMoneyMaker.com

Promotional Contest Winner: David Shaw – ProTycoon.com (Me)

As you can see I won the competition, it is the first time I have won a contest like this and I am very happy. Of course I have to thank all of you who helped me to win the Promotional Contest by checking out the contest. I am going to be giving something back to my readers in the coming days so subscribe to my feed so that you don’t miss out.

All of these tips and some extra ones are being compiled into an ebook by Jacob over at Group Writing Projects, I will let you all know when it is available as it should be a good read.

For now you should check out the following posts for advice on building your RSS subscriber count:

Jul14 in Reviews by admin

This is my second blog review in a series where I look at my subscribers blogs and point out what I think is good and what I think is bad about them. Last week I reviewed ‘Mommy Meryl‘, Meryl actually took on board some of my points and adjusted her blog to make her blog easier to read for her visitors.

As I pointed out last week, I am not telling the blogger what to do, I am just sharing my blogging experience and hopefully you can pick up some tips on how to improve your blogs as well.

This weeks blog is ClubBlogger.com, the blog is run by Larry, here is a quote from the about page:

ClubBlogger was created to share the latest and greatest in the blogging world, how to make money from your blog and other methods, and a place to go to find out how to be a better blogger!

The Club Blogger staff has had extensive experience blogging for several years now, and we have a goal to bring you top notch advice, tips, and tricks when it comes to blogging and succeeding online.

Below is a screenshot of the blog, for those of you who are not familiar with it:

clubblogger.com

My first impressions of the blog were slightly varied, the content is of good quality and informative, many bloggers would find useful. The design however has some major put-offs in terms of first impressions.

The fact is, when someone lands on your blog, you have only a few seconds to trap them and convert them to your blog, this means your blog needs to be easy on the eye and draw the user to the content.

I have picked out two points from ClubBlogger.com that I am going to talk about in this blog review. They are:

  1. Advertising
  2. Browser Compatibility

Advertising on blogs is something that has been talked about a lot in the blogosphere with everyone having their own views, each with advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion the two main views can be broken down into ‘Subtle’ and ‘In Your Face’.

‘Subtle Advertising’ is the one that I favour and use on my blog here, the ads are not blocking my readers from the content, nor are they obtrusive. This can have advantages such as making the blog easier for your visitors and making your blog look more professional. The disadvantages are that they can have lower CTR (Click Through Rates) which can effect performance in CPC (Cost Per Click) advertising.

‘In Your Face Advertising’ is a form of advertising where the user usually needs to click on an ad in order to earn you money, this means that your ads need to be visible and stand out to the reader. The advantages of ‘In Your Face Advertising’ are that you can earn more through CPC advertising. The disadvantage however is that it makes your blog look more unprofessional and often distracts from the content.

I much prefer the ‘Subtle’ approach on blogs, as their main focus is the written content. Going back to ClubBlogger.com you will notice that there is a mixture of the two, from my count I have found the following advertising on the homepage:

  • 6 examples of ‘In Your Face Advertising’
  • 9 examples of ‘Subtle Advertising’

That is alot of advertising for one page, my advice for ClubBlogger.com is to remove all In Your Face Advertising, and trim the Subtle advertising slightly to make the blog look more professional, I would suggest doing that by:

  1. Removing the Adsense Leaderboard and search box from under the navigation, this will help to pull the content of the blog further above the fold, helping to attract readers to your content.
  2. Remove the Adsense squares from the bottom of each post, to make browsing the content a lot easier.
  3. Remove the Adbrite banner from the footer of the page, as it is to far down the blog to have any impact.
  4. I would then move the 125×125 ads in the sidebar up above the ‘Image Hosting Secrets’ widget, so that they are above the fold and more appealing to potential advertisers.
  5. Remove the Adbrite inline ads, they can be very annoying.

These changes may see a drop in your blogs earnings, but by converting more visitors to readers you will increase your blogs page views and unique hits so that a higher fee can be obtained in the long run for the 125×125 ads.

Here is a what the blog would look like without the ads:

clubblogger.com

I am sure most people will agree that it looks more professional and would have a better first impression when landing on that blog.

Now onto browser compatibility, this is an issue that I have seen many blogger ignore. Every browser displays blogs slightly differently, so by check the compatibility of your blog in many browsers you can be sure that all your visitors are getting a good experience of your blog. Below is an image of how my FireFox browser views the ClubBlogger.com ‘About’ page:

clubblogger.com

As you can see I cannot read the content because the yellow sticky note is covering it. You need to check to make sure that your blog is compatible with the most used browers, check your stats to see the most used browser on your blog and make sure your blog works for those browsers.

As I have said before ClubBlogger.com has some good content, the way to grow this blog is to remove the focus away from the Ads and onto the content by bringing the content up above the fold and by sticking to ‘Subtle Advertising’ techniques.

Please check out ClubBlogger.com now if you have not already done so. Remember, if you want your blog reviewed, subscribe to my feed Via Email then Contact Me informing me you wish to be considered.

What are your views on ClubBlogger.com? Do you enjoy these reviews? Is there anything I should change about the reviews?

EntrecardIf you are a blogger then there is no doubt that you have heard about Entrecard, I am now putting it to the test. I signed up to Entrecard yesterday, but when I clicked submit I was still very unsure as to what I had actually signed up to. I knew that it was some kind of advertsing platform where you used points to buy advertising on other blogs, but appart from that I was entering this blind.

I have made it my duty to learn all I can about the service, to see if you should all be using it on your blogs. If you are using Entrecard, you shoud think about ‘Dropping’ your card into the slot in my sidebar, I believe that is the correct phrase. If you are not using it then you can sign up and drop your card in my sidebar, for some advertising on ProTycoon.com.

I will be measuring what success can be gained through this service, as well as studying what tactics work well. I will report back with my findings in the coming weeks.

Do you use Entrecard? What works well?

Building RSS GWPYesterday I was browsing through my comments, as I do many times everyday to reply to them all and I came across the following comment from Jacob from Group Writing Project.

David, you should consider entering this tip in my Building RSS Group Writing Project:

http://groupwritingprojects.com/blog/building-rss-group-writing-project/

All you would need to qualify for over $350 in prizes is to add a link to the announcement post at the above link. Although additional tips before Sunday night’s deadline would increase your chances of winning even more.

If I am being honest I had not really heard much about groupwritingprojects.com but after reading through the link he provided, I decided that it looked like a good deal.

What is it all about?

The goal of the project is simple:

Our goal: create an ultimate guide of methods, tips and tricks explaining how to grow blog subscriber numbers.

A guide so good, so useful, that every blogger will want to keep the e-book handy for reference.

And when they do, you and your blog will be a part of it.

The project is asking people to submit articles related to RSS that will be considered for use in an E-book, that could be read by bloggers all over the world. I would recommend this project to anyone who has written, or is going to write about RSS on their blogs, it is a great way to gain some extra exposure of your blog, there are a few rules however:

  • List your ideas for raising blog subscriber numbers in a blog post or, if your blog readers won’t be interested in that post, prepare the list in a separate HTML file, Word or OpenOffice document.
  • Research as much as you like but no plagiarism please. Cite if you copy quote.
  • All tips should be written with the idea that children WILL be reading them.
  • If you do a blog post, link back to this announcement.
  • Recommended: use any of the 4 logos included here in your post.
  • Multiple entries are allowed as long as they all arrive before the deadline (13th July). We want to have as many tips as possible.
  • To submit your entry, leave a comment here below with your blog post’s permalink url or email your list to jacob [dot] share [at] shareselectmedia [dot] com. You can also send individual tips via comments to this post.
As you can see it is very simple to enter and has some great benefits, but it gets even better, there are also prizes up for grabs, check out this lot:

One grand prize winner will win:

  1. US$100 via Paypal, sponsored by Group Writing Projects.
  2. A 30-minute subscriber growth consultation with Liz Strauss, courtesy of Liz Strauss.

Blogging GoalsI have posted previously about ‘Setting Blogging Goals‘ and have also outlined some of my goals for ProTycoon.com, such as ‘My Technorati Targets‘. This post is all about analyzing your progress in meeting those goals.

Setting your goals is the easy part, achieving them is where the hard work is. Many bloggers will set ambitious goals, this is not a bad thing as long as you are prepared to work hard and focus on achieving them. I promote ambitious goals, but not unrealistic goals, always make your goals achievable. What is the difference between an ambitious goals and an unrealistic goal?

An ambitious goal would be to increase your RSS subscriber count from 50 to 500, it is not impossible, but requires hard work and dedication to achieve.

An unrealistic goal would be to increase your RSS subscriber count from 50 to 1000 in one day, it simply will not happen, unless a miricle occurs.

Once you have set your goals, you then need to plan how and when you are going to achieve them. By planning out how you are going to achieve your goals you are making them easier to achieve. Lets look at an example from my Blogging Goals page where I stated that I wanted to take my RSS feed count to the 150 mark. I now need to plan my way to achieving this, so instead of saying that I am going to reach this goal by the end of July, I break it down into smaller goals. This could be by saying I will aim for 75 RSS subscribers by the end of July then for 150 by the end of August. This makes my goals more achievable and helps to keep me motivated.

In order to keep track of your goals you need to be analyzing them, this is not an easy process, but it has now become a whole lot easier thanks to Vandelay Website Design and ProTycoon.com. I came across a spreadsheet designed by Vandelay which helps to track your progress per month to help you achieve your blogging goals. I have adapted the spreadsheet slightly from the original to focus it more towards blogs.

The spreadsheet allows you to track your blogs Unique Visitors, Page Views, Subscriber Count, Technorati Rank, Technorati Authority, Blog Revenue and Post Count every month so that you can view your growth. This spreadsheet should cover many of your blogging goals that you have, you can also add any extra ones onto the end.

By using the spreadsheet you can see which areas of your blog are improving well and which need a little more work.

You can download the spreadsheet here: Blogging Goal Tracker.

I have used the spreadsheet to help me track ‘My Technorati Targets‘ over recent weeks and have achieved one of them, as I have dramatically improved my Technorati Rank, I still have two more left to achieve. In order to help me achieve another of my Technorati Targets, please add ProTycoon.com to your Technorati favourites. I will be writing a post dedicated to how I achieved my Technorati Goals, so if you want to learn how to increase your technorati stats, I suggest you subscribe to my feed, so you don’t miss my future posts.

    Add to Technorati Favorites

I want to know, how do you analyze your blogging goals? Have you recently achieved a goal?

Help me reach 150 RSS subscribers by Subscribing to my Feed via a Reader, or Via Email!

    RSS Group Writing Project

I would today like to introduce you to my new project. It is called ‘The Bloggers Survey’, as the name suggests it will be a survey of bloggers, with the aim of obtaining valuable information to help us all improve our blogs.

How does ‘The Bloggers Survey’ work?

The first stage of the process is to build up a list of questions that we all have about blogging, these questions will then be turned into a survey that I hope will be completed by 1000s of bloggers, once the survey is over it will then be turned into a report that will be shared via ProTycoon.com and will hopefully answer all your questions.

    What Happens Now?

We need your questions! I have already established a list of questions that people have sent me and that I have thought about. I now want to know what questions you have about blogging, so that I can help create a survey that answers all your questions.

It can be about anything related to blogging, no matter how big or small.

Post your questions in the comments section below and I will add them to the survey.

I would also like to know what you think of the survey, and also any other ideas that you think can be implemented into it?
