RollerCoaster Tycoon is another of the tycoon games that gained – and then maintained – a huge following almost as soon as it was released. The game initially debuted in 1999, the brainchild of Chris Sawyer, a game developer who had been successful in the field since the mid-Eighties and had already written one best-selling tycoon game – Transport Tycoon.
To create RollerCoaster Tycoon Sawyer drew on his personal love of theme parks. The game he created is far more of a building game than other tycoon games as the design and function of the rides can be personalized to a very high degree. And creating great rides really is the key to success in this game. Obviously, the better your offerings are the more likely you are to be able to attract crowds to your theme park.
It is not just rollercaosters that can be built in the game though. To make the theme park more rounded and appeal to more people players can also create log flumes, carousels, bumper cars, haunted houses, go karts and all kinds of other attractions. You do have to pay close attention to their construction though, as if you rides look great, do great things but are in the end not safe then you and your park can run into big trouble very quickly.
Because it is such a popular idea RollerCoaster Tycoon has been released in more than a few different forms and with more and more add ons – and now also DLC – that can expand the scope of the game even further. It has been ported onto a number of different game systems since it was first released for the PC including the xBox and as a mobile game for both the iOS and the Android operating systems.
