The Importance of ‘Spaces’ and Internet Marketing

This is Guest Post by Adam Torkildson

In today’s information revolution people are constantly being bombarded with information. So much so, that information today must be categorized and sub-categorized in order for us to process it. Our highly organized and specialized way of cataloging information is apparent in the number of highly specialized blogs, magazines, television channels and clubs.

Options are numerous for people today because of the ease with which we can now disseminate information. Fifty years ago television channels were divided into news channels and entertainment channels with a channel for children’s programs in some regions on the United States. Today there are channels for dog lovers, makeup enthusiasts and homeowners. There are channels geared to single races and minorities while some channels target single people and other targets married people with children and married people without children.

This specialization has changed the marketing world forever and offers marketers an amazing and valuable opportunity. Now, instead of working hard to find a space in the media where their target market will be most receptive, marketers can simply define their market and choose a specialized ‘space’ that had already been made.

Therefore, people today choose their spaces and in doing so are also choosing their advertisements. This means people will generally be more receptive to the messages they are seeing because they are choosing their space and their messages. What a valuable tool for marketers today. Now, marketers can reach their target markets much more easily than they could in the past through choosing specialized spaces. This is easily done through internet marketing.

Internet marketing is constantly changing and in order to be navigated it requires individuals who can remain plugged in to internet fads and advents in social media. Social media is defined as user generated content that is disseminated through social interaction on the web. In it through social media that people today create these specialized spaces. On facebook, users join and create clubs and can share pictures and almost limitless amounts of information.

This provides an opportunity for companies to market their products to those that are members of clubs that would be receptive to their messages. It also provides a platform for companies to share limitless information with their fans and customers in a way that they are used to receiving messages.

Companies today must evaluate their use of internet marketing. Those that are not taking advantage of internet marketing will be left in the dust of those that are creating specialized messages for specialized spaces.

There can be many different approaches depending on the product or service you have to offer at your store. Some times pay-per-click is the best approach, some times natural search and some time good old fashioned guerrilla marketing is best.
